I believe mharvey was correct in his statement. When you are monitoring the availability of the device, you are monitoring its response via ICMP/SNMP which indicates packet loss and response time. However, the packets are handled quite differently for hardware statistics. They resolve based on the OID, serial number and MAC address for starters. The interfaces are marked Unknown because the base MAC for the interface has changed. That is why you can change the name/description of an interface, and it never affects NPM.
